Book Review: Grim Tidings by B.K. Borison

Darcy Moore has been a reaper for a few decades, and she isn't sure if she is meant to be the last person someone sees before they move into their new stages. Every soul she takes the more it seems to weigh on her own. When she gets a new assignment in Annapolis, she is determined to change their fate, and her own. She wants to help someone, instead of take them away too soon. When she finds herself in a local dive bar on her first night, she runs into the very attractive Gabriel, and after what can only be described as a life changing make out session, they realize that they are both immortal beings...except he is a guardian angel, and now he is determined to make sure no one else dies on his watch.
Gabriel has been alive for centuries, morphing who he is the fit the times and now working at a dive bar full of a lot of different characters. He is immediately drawn to Darcy, but finds himself between a rock and hard place when he learns what she is. He knows he can't let another soul pass on his watch, worried about the repercussions if he were to fail. In order to keep Darcy from completing her assignment he decides to keep her close, helping her with her afterlife bucket list and hoping to get hints as to who her mark is. If he can save them, maybe he won't feel as guilty about the people he couldn't.
Even with the fundamental differences, Gabriel and Darcy are drawn to each other in a way neither of them have experienced before. Gabriel can't help but feel a pull to Darcy and she can't seem to stop thinking about him. Now the two of them, and the undead dog Darcy saved, are working both against and for each other to try to change what fate has decided for them.
This book reminded me of all the fallen angel books I read in my late-teens, but in the best way. I love the idea of a reaper and an angel falling for each other, even with their different goals. Gabriel and Darcy are both at odds with what their job is and what is means for the mortals around them, but they also know they are both craving a change from the same. As they spend more of their time together, especially doing the small things Darcy never got to experience as a mortal, you can see how their connection grows. One of my favorite parts of this story was in the last twenty-five percent of the book and I refuse to spoil it, but just know if you read it you are in for a wild ride with the end.
Like Good Spirits, I liked how unique the story is overall and how it connects to the other book. I also think we might get a sneak peak at who the next book might follow, especially near the end of the book. I enjoy how B.K. Borison writes and I also like how this book can take a really heavy topic but make it somehow feel both romantic and not like the end. It is a good book to start in this cozy fall weather for sure.
