Book Review: Lady's Knight by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Gwen, the local blacksmith's daughter, and Isobelle, the princess of the realm, join forces during a tournament dedicated to Dragonslayers in order to achieve their own dreams in this opposites attract YA sapphic romantasy.

I loved the Lady Jane series, and one of my favorite movies is A Knight's Tale. So when this book popped up and was billed as a combination of the two, I jumped at the chance to read it.
Gwen is obsessed with the tale of Sir Gawain, and having trained in secret to be a knight, she is given the chance to showcase her skills at a tournament. The only issue is that girls are not allowed to compete. Isobelle, meanwhile, has been promised in marriage to the winner of the tournament, a fate she is hoping to avoid. When Isobelle discovers Gwen's secret, having entered the torunament by pretending to be a boy, she masterminds a cover story and brings Gwen into a world of courtly maneuverings, secret scheming, and nobility tomfoolery. As the two continue to get away with their plans, foes from both of their pasts resurface and challenge their right to self determination. Amidst it all, they also develop feelings for each other, throwing another wrench into their best laid plans.
This book was just pure fun. It was endearing in all the right places, had excellent, complex side characters, and featured dragons- what's not to love! It was a solid 4/5, and I plan to track down the sequel soon. If you are a fan of Lex Croucher, this is a series for you!
